Will Sparrow has stolen his last meal from the innkeeper to whom his father sold him in return for free ale, and is now on the run. While he is a self-centered liar and a thief, Will is also innocent and naive. As he often states, "I care for none but myself and nothing but my belly." During his travels, Will encounters truly bizarre and interesting characters, as he searches for food, shelter, and a place to fit in, in essence for a family. On his journey through the small towns and countryside of Elizabethan England, he learns about false first impressions and the complexities of character.
